Finally, I'd propose that the combination of a wonderful songwriter, a fine singer and an empathetic accompanist is effectively a trio, so on Ian Shaw's Stephensong we get yet another ensemble, this being Shaw's expressive voice, Barry Green's piano and arrangements and the incomparable writing of Stephen Sondheim. Shaw's delivery throughout is animated and articulate without defaulting into technical slickness, making it the perfect channel for Sondheim's literate lyrical style and unique melodic sense.
