Album Review: What's New

The Sunday Times

Clive Davis, 12th April, 2020

This is a real meeting of minds. A singer in the virtuoso Mark Murphy tradition, Shaw cuts a typically angular path through a set of standards from Alfie to Ellington's Come Sunday and Jobim's If You Never Come to Me (alias Inutil Paisagem), supported only by Ballamy's feathery tenor sax and Safir's piano. It's a taut and thoroughly absorbing three-way conversation, stripped of clichés and padding.
