Review: Drawn To All Things

Scotland on Sunday

Pop music's back catalogue has proved to be a rich source of material for jazzers in recent times, and the award-winning British jazz vocalist Ian Shaw recently said that he wanted to record a Joni Mitchell songbook before Elvis Costello thought of the idea. To those uninitiated in Mitchell, it sounds as if the soulful Shaw has succeeded in making the 14 very personal and evocative songs his own - with a little help from the likes of fellow singers Claire Martin and Lea de Laria, and a top-notch band featuring trumpeter Guy Barker and guitarist Jim Mullen.
